Celebrating the Life of William T. "Bill" Smith
1940 – 2025
William T. Smith, affectionately known as Bill, passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on July 2, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Bill lived a life marked by dedication, humor, quiet strength, and a deep love for his family and community.
Born and raised in Jamaica Plain, Boston, Bill graduated from Boston Tech High School in 1959. Soon after, he proudly served in the U.S. Army as a draftsman, contributing to classified military operations with precision and integrity. His commitment to service, both to his country and to others, was a defining trait throughout his life.
In 1970, Bill married the love of his life, Rosemarie (Saia), beginning a partnership full of laughter, hard work, and cherished memories. They made their home in Weymouth, where they raised seven children and built a life filled with warmth and togetherness. In recent years, Bill and Rose made their home in Whitman, where Bill remained active and social in the community.
Bill spent over 30 years working in Benefit Plans at State Street Bank. He was known by colleagues for his reliability and steady hand. After retiring at age 63, he enjoyed a second career—and many friendly conversations—while pumping gas at Sunset Sunoco in Weymouth for 12 more years.
Bill had a deep appreciation for life's simple pleasures. He loved a good card game—especially cribbage at the Whitman Senior Center—where he forged friendships and kept his mind sharp. A sports enthusiast, he bowled and played softball for many years on State Street’s company leagues, showing up with competitive spirit and team camaraderie. He also had a lucky streak with the Massachusetts Lottery - winning $72,000 on a game show, numerous sports tickets/memorabilia, and countless second chance lottery submissions to the Mass State Lottery.
Above all, Bill was a family man. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 55 years, Rosemarie Smith of Whitman; his seven loving children: Matthew (Barbara) of Glendale, AZ; Joseph (Lisa) of Braintree; Paul (Karen) of Whitman; Philip (Jennifer) of Hingham; Christopher (Jessica) of Abington; Daniel (Jaye) of Bridgewater; and Mary (Kris) of Whitman. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Lauren, Abby, Ethan, Sophie, Austin, Libby, Lucas, Ava, Lylah, Collin, Liam, and Elijah.
Bill is also survived by his dear siblings Charlotte Tringali of Plymouth, Valerie Blaine of Franklin, and Paul Smith of Roslindale, as well as many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
To those who knew him, Bill was a steady presence—humble, funny, generous, and kind. His legacy lives on in the strong family he built, the friendships he nurtured, and the quiet way he made the world a better place, one small act at a time.
