Wendell G. Newell

Wendell G. Newell, age 83, of Bridgewater, MA, passed away suddenly on July 5, 2026.

Born on May 30, 1943, in Weymouth, MA, Wendell was the beloved child of William and Elsie (Langford) Newell. He grew up in Weymouth and spent his life building lasting relationships and creating cherished memories with those fortunate enough to know him.

Wendell joined the Navy in 1962, serving aboard the USS Coral Sea. During his service, he earned the rare distinction of becoming a Golden Shellback, an honor bestowed upon sailors who cross both the Equator and the International Date Line at their intersection—a testament to the unique voyages he experienced while serving his country.

Wendell was united in marriage in 1969 to Elaine R. (Sullivan) Newell, and together they shared many years of love, partnership, and devotion. They started their family in Dorchester then settled in Whitman for many years. Most recently resided in Bridgewater. He worked as a Sprinkler Fitter for Local 550, where he had a long career and was respected for his dedication, professionalism, and meticulous nature.

Outside of work, Wendell found joy in being outside and landscaping. He was meticulously organized in everything he did. Whether spending time with family, helping a neighbor, or pursuing favorite pastimes, he approached life with enthusiasm and generosity.

Those who knew Wendell will remember him for his dedication and loyalty, dry sense of humor, and gruff but big heart. His love for family and friends was unwavering, and the memories shared with him will be treasured forever.

Wendell was preceded in death by his parents, William and Elsie Newell, and son, Fred Corbitt.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Elaine Newell; his children, Brian Corbitt of Whitman, Michelle Drosos and her husband John of Bridgewater, John Newell and his wife Kristin of Carver; Grandchildren, Jason, Evan, Peter, Lauren, Jenna, Sarah, Mallory, and Melissa; Along with many extended family members and friends who will deeply miss him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to the visitation for Wendell on Sunday, July 12, 2026, from 2-6pm in the C.C. Shepherd Funeral Home located at 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) Weymouth, MA. Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home on Monday morning at 9am for a Celebration of Life Reflection prior to the Funeral Mass which will take place at St. Francis Xavier Church at 10am. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Whitman Veterans Service in Wendell's memory.
