Weymouth

Viola Reed, of Weymouth, Massachusetts, passed away on September 10, 2026, at the age of 103. She was born on March 27, 1923, to the late Harry Carlson and Hilda Carlson.

Viola was a loving, independent, friendly, easygoing, and sincere woman who possessed quiet strength and timeless class. She had a warm and welcoming nature, and her kindness toward others was an important part of who she was. Those who knew Viola often described her as incredibly sweet, and she had a way of making everyone around her feel comfortable and cared for.

Viola enjoyed playing Bridge and Scrabble, reading, entertaining, and spending time with her family and friends. Her faith and her church were also very important parts of her life. She was a longtime member of Old South Union Church in South Weymouth, where she served as church secretary for many many years. Her dedication to her church and her community was a meaningful part of her life.

Some of Viola's most treasured memories were the simple traditions she shared with those she loved. One of her most special moments each year was gathering with her family at her home every Christmas Eve. She will also be remembered whenever the color yellow catches someone's eye, or a visit to the ocean to watch the waves, and whenever her beloved cats come to mind. These reminders will keep her memory close to the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Viola was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Stina Simons and Greta Trowbridge; and her husbands, Warren Reed and Richard Stard.

She is survived by her children, Alan Reed and his wife Wanda, Lisa Thompson and her husband George; her brother Alfred Carlson and his wife Barbara: her stepchildren Gary Stard and his sister Marsha Stard and their families; her grandchildren, Zachary Reed and his wife Becky, Morgan Reed and his wife Sarah, George Thompson III and his wife Molly, and Tracy Nichter and her husband Jesse; her 10 great-grandchildren: and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Viola's life was defined by kindness, strength, faith, family, and the many relationships she treasured. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Old South Union Church, 25 Columbian Street, South Weymouth, MA 02190. Refreshments will follow the service.
