Richard W. Smith, Jr.

Richard W. Smith Jr., of Weymouth, originally from Staten Island, NY, passed away on August 27, 2026, at the age of 79. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Jane Sullivan Smith. He was born in New York City on December 4, 1946 to the late Richard W. Smith Sr. and Mary Gloria (Cooke) Smith.

Richard graduated from Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, NY; Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI; and Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. He was a local business owner, working for many years as an investment counselor. He was incredibly dedicated to his faith and was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Parish. He also served as a volunteer with the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Boston. He found much strength and comfort in his faith and church community.

Richard had a livelong love of sports, from playing and coaching basketball and baseball, to being an avid golfer and enjoying swimming. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends, especially cherishing his time in Huletts Landing on Lake George. As a natural storyteller, Richard loved regaling others with tales—both old and new—to anyone willing to listen. He was an avid reader of history books and enjoyed sharing his latest discoveries with others. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his unyielding support to others.

Richard is survived by his children, Deirdre Smith and her husband, CJ Congrove, of Tiverton, Rhode Island, and his son, Patrick Smith of Vermont. He is predeceased by his daughter, Shannon Smith. He is also survived by his younger siblings, Margaret Hamilton, Colleen Giddings, Michael Smith, Kevin Smith, and Gregory Smith.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Tuesday, September 8, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at C.C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant Street, Weymouth.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 9, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, 234 Pleasant Street, Weymouth. Burial will follow at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, 726 Washington Street, Weymouth.
