Michael P. Merten, 60, of South Weymouth, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief yet courageous battle with cancer.

Born and raised in Weymouth, Michael attended Weymouth Public Schools and spent his life doing what he loved most: working on cars. A gifted Chrysler Master Mechanic, he owned and operated American Auto Repair in Kingston for many years, earning the respect of customers and fellow mechanics alike through his knowledge, honesty, and dedication. Most recently, he worked for New Flyer, an electric bus manufacturer in Hyde Park.

Anyone who knew Michael knew he had a personality that filled every room. He was often the loudest person there, quick with a laugh or a story, but behind that booming voice was the biggest heart. Michael was a humble and generous man who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. He never hesitated to lend a hand, offer encouragement, or make someone smile. His kindness and compassion touched countless lives.

Michael had a lifelong passion for cars and NASCAR and especially enjoyed making trips to New Hampshire Motor Speedway to watch the races. Whether in a garage or at the racetrack, he was happiest surrounded by engines, friends, and family.

One of Michael’s proudest accomplishments was his recovery. He recently celebrated 18 years of sobriety, receiving his 18-year Alcoholics Anonymous medallion. His recovery journey became a source of strength and hope for others. His family is especially grateful to Tom Nagle, whose friendship, guidance, and unwavering support meant so much throughout Michael’s journey.

Michael was the beloved son of the late John and Frances Merten and was predeceased by his sister, Jean Merten.

He leaves behind his loving siblings: Mary-Ann Cole of North Weymouth, James and his wife, Martha, of Henderson, Nevada, Trisha Fleming and her husband, David of South Yarmouth, and John Merten of South Weymouth. He also leaves seven cherished nieces and nephews, nine great-nieces and great nephew, along with many cousins, extended family members, and lifelong friends who will forever treasure his memory.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at CareOne and Old Colony Hospice for the exceptional care they provided. They also wish to express their deepest appreciation to his devoted niece, Kristen, and his beloved cousin, Darlene, whose unwavering love, compassion, and support brought Michael comfort during the difficult months that followed his diagnosis.

A Celebration of Michael’s Life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael’s memory may be made to: SSPR Wey of Life PRC, 383 Bridge St., Weymouth 02191, weyoflifeprc.org/donate or The Center for Melanoma Oncology at Dana Farber, c/o Dr. Justine Cohen, 450 Brookline Ave., Boston, 02215.

Though his voice has fallen silent, Michael’s generosity, resilience, infectious laughter, and enormous heart will continue to live on in the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
