Mary B. Toth

February 23, 1941 — February 17, 2024

Weymouth

Mary Blume Toth, 82, of South Weymouth, MA passed away in Naples, Florida, with her husband Bill, the love of her life for over 58 years, by her side. Although longtime residents of South Weymouth, Mary and Bill enjoyed spending winters in Naples among many dear friends.

Mary was born on February 23, 1941 to Catherine and Thomas Blume in Quincy, MA. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School in Weymouth, she attended Aquinas Junior College and later worked at Marsh & McLellan at the Statler Hotel in Boston, the same location as her sister Fran. She met Bill through their close mutual friends, Lois and Joe McCourt. They married in 1965, and had five children.

When Bill joined the Braintree Yacht Club, Mary, always a good sport, became a “first mate” and for decades, they and their children spent summer weekends on the family boat and had many memorable trips to World’s End with the sprawling and fun BYC crowd.

While her children were young, Mary worked for years at the Telephone Answering Service and then Massachusetts Electric (later National Grid) and forged many lifelong friendships among colleagues. She retired from National Grid after serving for 13 years.

Mary was the adored matriarch and focal point of her family and happiest when spending time with family and friends. She hosted countless cheerfully chaotic holidays and birthdays at her home where everyone enjoyed her famous meatballs, apple pie, and chocolate vinegar cake. Cherishing time with her grandchildren, she watched them when they were younger and then cheered them on in everything that they did as they grew older, alongside Bill.

Mary was a devoted member of St. Francis Xavier parish, where she attended weekly Mass, saw all of her children baptized, some of her children married, and even some of her grandchildren baptized. She taught CCD and volunteered at the church for many years. She and Bill developed many close friendships with other parishioners and especially deacon Joe Canova and his wife Patty.

An avid reader and passionate learner, Mary was a longtime and active student at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UMass Boston. Her love for the color purple knew no bounds.

Mary was a cherished wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend whose quiet yet fierce love of her family and friends will be missed immeasurably.

Mary is survived by her husband William Toth, Jr. and their five children and their families: William Toth III of Boston and his children, Madison, Isabelle and Preston; Michelle Toth of London, England; Michael Toth of Londonderry, NH, his wife Kelly and their children Marinna and Connor, his partner Isabel and their daughter Noelle; Joanna Toth Christensen, her husband Brian and their children Ryan and Audrey; and Laura Toth Phillips, her husband Craig and their daughter Paige. Mary is also survived by her sister Frances Richard of Brewster, MA and her brother William Blume of Hanover, MA and many beloved nieces, nephews and Godchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Barbara Blume Collins, her brother-in-law Donald Richard, and her great-niece Kaitlin Michelle Zavalcofsky.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a visitation for Mary on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, from 4-8pm in the CC Shepherd Funeral Home located at 134 Pleasant St Columbian Sq.) South Weymouth. A Celebration of Life will be held the following morning, Thursday February 29th, at 9am in the funeral home, prior to the Mass at Saint Francis Xavier Church, at 10am.  All who own something purple are encouraged to wear it, if they’d like.
