Maria Pitanga

Maria Pitanga, 92, of Weymouth passed away at home on May 21, 2025. Maria was born in northeast Brazil, where she was raised with her 10 siblings until getting married to the love of her life, Darwin Pitanga, at 18 years old. Maria was a passionate homemaker and spent her days looking after her children, grandchildren, and eventually, great grandchildren. Maria loved dancing and music, you could frequently find her listening to Roberto Carlos or Julio Iglesias.

After losing her husband, Darwin and two sons, Wagner and Marco Anthony, Maria started a new beginning in the United States, moving to Miami, FL in 1995, before moving to Weymouth in 2018. Maria was the perfect example of resilience and what it means to be a mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter Valecia Tavares of Weymouth, her 5 grandchildren: Edwin, Paula, Julia, Isabel, Brieguel, Gabriele, and Daniel, and her 6 great grandchildren.

Friends and family are respectfully invited to a memorial service for Maria on Monday, May 26, 2025, from 12-2 pm, at C.C. Shepherd Funeral Home located at 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.), S. Weymouth, MA. A funeral service in honor of Maria's life will take place immediately following the visitation at 2pm.
