Lawrence Turner, of North Weymouth, died peacefully on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. He was 95 years old.
Larry was born in Sommerville, MA on September 18, 1930. He was the son of the late Jeanette (Page) Turner and Lawrence Alonzo Turner Sr.
Larry was a native, raised in the Sommerville area and a proud graduate of Sommerville High School after which he attended Boston University for a short period. He answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army in 1952 serving during the Korean War Era stationed in Fort Benning, GA honorably discharged in 1954.
Following his discharge, Larry married his long-time love Juanita Jean Swingler. They were married at College Avenue Methodist Church in Sommerville on September 18, 1954. Juanita and Lawrence spent their first few years as newlyweds in Boston before settling in North Weymouth in 1957, where they would spend the next seven-plus decades at each other’s side. This past September marked their 71st wedding anniversary.
Work and family were Larry’s passion. He completed a 30+ year career with the government’s Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), enduring the daily commute to Boston to provide for his family.
Upon his uncle Ed’s passing, Larry took over his manufacturing business and grew both clientele and revenue for another 30+ year second career and was an active member of the Jaycee’s.
A dedicated father to his four children he supported their activities from the junior league years through college, Larry supported all four of his children’s skating, basketball, baseball, football and tennis activities.
When his boys were in scouting, Larry was an active leader participating in outdoor camping events and group meetings. He was an ardent supporter of his daughters who were both good athletes and exceled in basketball. He was most proud that each of his children attended college and went on to have successful business careers.
Sports was a major part of his life both as avid spectator and participant supporting New England teams (like an Olympian) as a master at the cribbage board and enjoyed time on the tennis courts.
The moments became more filled with pride with the births of his four grandchildren. Each of his daughters giving him two grands. He watched them become successful adults and stayed interested in their growth and accomplishments.
Larry was fortunate enough to boast about his 16 year old and 3 year old great grandsons. Again, very supportive of their expanding achievements.
In addition to their family, Juanita and Larry had one adventure they truly enjoyed and did for over 65 years. Both parents and kids spent every summer enjoying the Massachusetts hamlet of Martha’s Vineyard. For over 20 years Jean and Larry owned a winter getaway timeshare on the island Saint. Maarten. Island retreats seemed to be the one passion they could share with their family. It’s now a family tradition with great anticipation especially with the grands and great grands.
Larry is the beloved husband of Juanita Jean (Swingler) Turner. He was the devoted father of Paul Turner and his wife Tracey of Windsor, SC, Eric Turner and his partner Sal Scamardo from NY, NY., Pamela Turner of South Weymouth MA and Patricia Harkins and her husband John from Hanover, MA. Larry is survived by grandchildren Aaron Range, Jacob Range, Jack Harkins and Makayla Harkins. He is also survived by great-grands Owen Range and Mason Range.
