Joan Patricia Merten, a lifelong Weymouth resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 29, 2026. She was 91.
Joan P. Mahoney was born in North Weymouth to Beatrice (Crean) and Michael J. Mahoney. She graduated from Weymouth High School in 1952, and was a member of the St Jerome’s CYO and Weymouth High School Bands.She earned her Associates Degree from The Burdett School of Business in Boston.
She had fond memories of working at John Hancock. She met her future husband, Bernie Merten, while working at Richmond Brothers. They married in 1958, and raised four children in East Weymouth.
Joan loved to travel and especially enjoyed a trip to Ireland with her cousins to visit their family in Kerry. She was an avid reader, knitter and beach-goer and instilled a love of reading in her children. She was a volunteer for many years at the Weymouth Food Pantry and belonged to Immaculate Conception Parish in East Weymouth for more than sixty years. Joan devoted her life to homemaking and will be remembered for her quick wit, warmth, and generosity of spirit. She loved a good conversation with her family, friends and even strangers!
Joan is predeceased by her husband, Bernie, and her brother Daniel Mahoney. She is survived by her children Therese (Dan), Sheila, Bernadette and Christopher (Sara). Gramma Joanie is beloved by her grandchildren Emma (Kevin), Gus (Lissa), Maude (Mac), Kate, Chris, Ryan, Caroline, Teddy, Henry, and Elizabeth, and great-grandchildren, Calvin, Lorelai, and Orlaith. The family would like to thank the kind staff at Sunrise of Braintree who lovingly cared for Joan.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant Street (Columbian Square), Weymouth, MA 02190. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 720 Broad Street, Weymouth. Those wishing to attend are kindly asked to gather at the church by 10:15 a.m.
Donations in Joan’s name may be made to Weymouth Food Pantry.
