James L. McCarthy

Weymouth, MA

James L. McCarthy, age 83, of Weymouth, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 2, 2025. Jim was born in Dorchester and moved to Quincy where he graduated from North Quincy high school in 1961. After graduation Jim served in the United States Navy. In 1965, Jim married the love of his life Sally Giallongo. They were happily married for more than 61 years.  Jim and Sally started a family in Quincy for a short time before settling in Weymouth where they raised their five children and have remained ever since.

Jim worked for over 30 years at New England Telephone Company before moving on to a successful career as a consultant to Lucent Technologies and various other communication companies. Jim was very active in local politics. He was an elected Town Meeting Member, served as the Conservation Commissioner and on the Appropriations Committee for the town of Weymouth. Jim was also a member of the Weymouth Marine Militia and the Wessagusett Yacht Club, where he became a Commodore for the Club. Jim enjoyed spending time in Cotuit with his friends and family, swimming at Riley’s, fishing, boating and quahauging with his grandkids. 

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Sally McCarthy (Giallongo) of Weymouth, his loving children Chris McCarthy and his wife Amy of North Reading, Maureen Vagedes and her husband Brian of Georgia, Margo Collins and her husband Brian of Plymouth, Sara Harlow and her husband Mike of Rockland, and Tricia Ferrante and her husband Justin of Norwell, and his cherished grandchildren Cole, James, Kevin, Joe, Brian, Tim, Michael, Celia, Abby, Luca, and Fiona. Jim is also the brother of Jean Roma, Ann Allegrinni, Richard McCarthy, and the late Dan McCarthy.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to the visitation for Jim on Wednesday, October 8, 2025 from 10:30am to Noon in the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home located at 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) Weymouth, MA 02190. A Funeral Mass will take place immediately following the visitation at 1pm at St. Jerome Church located on Bridge Street in N. Weymouth. Jim will be buried at a later date in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
