Attorney Gerald T. Murphy of South Weymouth passed away surrounded by his loving family on October 30th, 2025 at the age of 65.
Jerry was born on April 12, 1960 in Brockton to John F. and M. Lois Murphy. A graduate of Cardinal Spellman High School, Jerry also graduated from Westfield State University and Southern New England School of Law. Jerry maintained a successful law practice in Quincy and Columbian Square in South Weymouth, where he practiced law as a beloved local attorney. He was admitted to the United States Supreme Court, Federal District Court of Massachusetts, United States First Circuit Court and Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. Jerry’s career in law was impressive in itself; more impressive, however, was his dedication and unrelenting willingness to help others with any and every legal matter. If anyone had a question or needed help in any way, Jerry was the man to call. He was admired and absolutely adored by his community, friends, and most importantly, his family.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Joyce (Oliva) Murphy. He is also survived by his greatest and proudest accomplishments, his four children: Emily Winrow and her husband David; Gerald Murphy and his wife Kathleen; Michael Murphy and his wife Carolyn; and Katherine Murphy and her boyfriend, Mark DePari. The one thing that Jerry enjoyed most in retirement was being “Papa” to his nine beautiful grandchildren: Madison, Maeve, Mckenna, Gerald, Charlotte, Molly, Olivia, Mairead, and Thomas. Jerry is also survived by his brothers John, Paul and James, their spouses, and his six nieces and nephews.
An important goal in Jerry’s life that he successfully achieved was: “to not only be a loving provider to his forever grateful family, but raising such polite, kind, and respectful children.” Despite a demanding work schedule, Jerry never missed any of his children’s events. He was present at every single soccer game, track meet, and school event; he would even answer his phone during client meetings if one of his children called, just to make sure they were okay before politely asking if he could call back after the meeting. He never missed anything, and he has passed that torch on to his four children. He was truly one in a million.
Right up until his final moments, Jerry made sure that everyone was taken care of and that his wife and children would have “nothing to worry about in their future endeavors”. That was Jerry – always putting his family before himself. Our lives will never be the same but we can all honor him by doing good for others and loving each other deeply.
“I am the proudest dad to have ever walked this earth. Thank you for the greatest honor of my life.”
