Dorothy Mareb

Hingham

Dorothy K. Mareb (Cowe) passed away peacefully on January 18, 2023, at the age of 96. Dorothy, the oldest of the five children of Mel and Irene Cowe, was raised and educated in Quincy. Dorothy married Richard E. Kenerson in 1950 and started a family in Abington, eventually settling in Whitman. Following Richard's death, Dorothy went to work to provide for her young children as office manager at Keith and Mareb. In 1973, she married Brockton businessman Peter Mareb. They resided in Norwell, where they often hosted family and friends, and spent summers at Peter’s favorite getaway in Falmouth. They were happily married until his death in 1990.

Dorothy was an intrepid traveler, enjoying many trips with family and friends both in the US and Europe. She took wonderful vacations with Peter and later with her baby sister Janet to Scotland, Italy, England, and France. She was also an avid sports fan, particularly enjoying golf and tennis. She spoke often of one of her most memorable trips to Scotland, home of her Cowe ancestors, where she along with family attended the British Open at St. Andrews.

When she wasn’t zipping all around in her Acura, Dorothy enjoyed reading and gardening. She was famous for her kindness to all living creatures, including being a devoted pet owner and feeder of the local fox family at her Norwell home. The matriarch of her extended family, Dorothy was known for her quiet generosity and no-nonsense demeanor, often being described lovingly as a “force of nature.”

Dorothy is survived by her loving daughters, Gail Aten (William) of Mendon and Joyce Brown of Hanover. She is also survived by her grandchildren David Webb (Brenda) and Andrew Brown (Caitlin) and her great grandchildren, Griffin, Kayleigh, and Matthew. Her sister Janet Colford of Bridgewater and many nieces and nephews also survive her.

Services will be held for Dorothy for close friends and family in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the World Wildlife Fund, P.O. Box 97180, Washington, D.C. 20090-7180 or Angell Memorial (MSPCA) using the link provided. https://www.mspca.org/donate-now/
