David R. Gilbert, 63, formerly of Weymouth and Bridgewater, passed away unexpectedly on June 12, 2026.
Born in Weymouth on November 14, 1962, David was raised and educated on the South Shore and graduated from South Shore Vocational Technical High School with the Class of 1982.
David spent much of his life doing what he loved most—working with his hands. A gifted craftsman, he could fix, build, or tow just about anything. He was especially proud of his wooden model tow trucks, built entirely from scratch, which showcased his remarkable talent, creativity, and attention to detail. His work and craftsmanship became a source of pride and admiration among family, friends, and neighbors, who were consistently amazed by what he could create.
David spent several years living in Florida, where he started to raise his family and built many lasting memories. He lived in St. Petersburg and the Florida Keys, where he spent much of his time on and around the water working with boats. Boating was a lifelong interest of his, and he remained a longtime member of Sea Tow in Florida.
Back in Massachusetts, David became well known throughout the towing community. He owned Central Towing for a time and later worked for Express Towing. Through his work and outgoing personality, he easily connected with people from all walks of life, whether talking about boats, cars, towing, wood work or sharing stories from years gone by. He became a familiar face throughout the South Shore area, and the conversations he shared with others stayed with the people who knew him.
Above all else, David loved his children. Some of his happiest moments were spent in the garage with his sons, tinkering, teaching them what he knew, sharing stories, and passing along the skills that came so naturally to him. He also shared a special bond with his daughter, who could always count on long phone calls and big bear hugs from her dad. The memories he created with his family will be cherished forever.
David is survived by his beloved Rosemary Gilbert; his daughter, Brianna Gilbert and her fiancé, Michael Kane of Belchertown, Massachusetts; his sons, David Gilbert and Tyler Gilbert of Rockland, Massachusetts; his siblings, Laura Gardner and John Gilbert of Largo, Florida, and Brittani Kaufman of Alexandria, Virginia; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, O. Thomas and Virginia Gilbert, and his brother, William Lordan.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at C.C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant Street (Columbian Square), South Weymouth. Cremation will follow.
