Brian Dunbar

Brian John Dunbar, of Weymouth, passed away peacefully on his 83rd birthday, September 17, 2026. He was born in Boston on September 17, 1943, to the late Arthur and Ann (Farmer) Dunbar.

Brian was a graduate of Weymouth High School, Class of 1961, where he played football, hockey, and baseball. He was a gifted athlete and is very well-known in Weymouth for his contributions to the Weymouth High School sports programs. For many years, he was a member of the Weymouth Athletic Council, raising money for athletic programs and organizing year end banquets for the football team.

After high school, he joined the union as a Sheet Metal worker. He was a proud member of Local 17 and worked for Harrington Brothers for nearly 40 years until he retired.

Brian had a multitude of hobbies and interests. He loved skiing, playing golf and planning parties. One of his favorite activities was playing in the Elks golf league on Wednesday nights. After he retired, he spent many years as a starter at the South Shore Country Club golf course. He also spent his time volunteering for many different organizations and raising money for various charities that he was passionate about.

As a life-long sports enthusiast, he never missed a Weymouth High School Thanksgiving football game. He also gave generously of his time by coaching youth hockey and later, girls’ softball and basketball.

Brian was truly an orchestrator of fun, always organizing parties, events and get-togethers with his family and friends. He was a lifelong member of the Elks where he served as the entertainment coordinator and helped plan all the Elks parties and events. He was also a member of the Sons of Italy, the Eagles, and the Knights of Columbus.

Brian was deeply devoted to his family, friends, and neighbors. He was a selfless and generous man, who was always willing to step in and help others with whatever project they needed done. He was a true patriarch whose kindness, warmth, humor, and generosity will be greatly missed.

Brian was the devoted husband of JoAnne (Savoie) Dunbar. He is survived by his children, Kristen Palmer and her husband Ed of South Weymouth; Kara Willis and her husband Michael of Abington; Bob Broderick Jr. and his wife Freda of Florida; Kathy Prisco of Abington; and Tracey Haddad and her husband Paul of Bridgewater. He is also survived by his sister, Bonnie Hovey of Arizona; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his two brothers, Arthur and Edward.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, September 24, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. at C.C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant Street, Weymouth. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, September 25, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, 234 Pleasant Street, Weymouth.
