Wilbur "Bill" Lamie

Wilbur “Bill” Lamie of Weymouth, formerly of Quincy and Dorchester, passed away peacefully at home on May 9 after a long illness. He was 94.

Bill was born in Boston in 1930 to Henry and Alice (Fennessey) Lamie. His early years were filled with sports, church activities, performing in vaudeville shows, and making mischief with his “gang,” the Wildcats, who became his lifelong friends. He graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1947. Bill joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1950 and served for four years, which included combat in the Korean Conflict as well as better times playing on a traveling baseball team while stationed in Japan. After his honorable discharge, he attended night school at Northeastern University thanks to the GI Bill, becoming the first in his family to earn a college degree.

Bill worked in insurance for his entire career, starting as a mailroom clerk during high school and becoming an expert commercial lines underwriter at Kemper Insurance and a series of insurance agencies in Boston. He was proud of his ability to find coverage for even the most unusual types of risks, including arts, antiquities, and various forms of professional liability. He was equally proud of never calling in sick (just one sick day in a 30+-year stretch) and continuing to work into his 80s.

Born into the Great Depression, he lived simply and never forgot the value of a good deal, right up to his final days scouring the weekly sales flyer from Market Basket. He was also devoted to his family and his community, which included serving as a Cub Scout leader, coaching kids’ sports teams, organizing and playing in adult volleyball leagues, and running Weymouth Youth Hockey’s Learn to Skate program for more than a decade.

Bill is survived by his wife, Dianne of Weymouth; four children from his first marriage, James of Pembroke, Jeanne of Quincy, Paul of Holbrook, Julie of Quincy; two children shared with Dianne, Chris of Watertown and Rachel of Arvada, Colorado; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Bob and Jack, and sister Jean.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to the visiting hours for Bill on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, from 4-7pm at the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home located at 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.), S. Weymouth, MA. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at C.C. Shepherd at 9am on Wednesday, May 21 (please gather at 8:45am). Burial will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
