Bernard Henry Merten

Bernard H. Merten of Weymouth passed away at home on Dec 28, 2023. He was 97.

Bernie was born in South Weymouth to Bernard B. Merten and Mary Katherine (White) Merten. He graduated from Weymouth High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration from Northeastern Univ. He was a long-time member of the Weymouth Knights of Columbus and the Weymouth Elks.

Bernie loved his grandchildren and traveled to visit them wherever they were. He was an avid New England sports fan and continued to follow Weymouth teams too. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, especially tomatoes, and playing his daily number.

Bernie is predeceased by his parents Bernard B. Merten and Mary Katherine (White) and his five beloved siblings, Jack, Mary, Joe, Bob and Phil. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Joan P. (Mahoney) Merten of Weymouth and four children: Therese (Dan), Sheila, Bernadette and Christopher (Sara). Bernie was a proud grandfather to Emma (Kevin), Augustus (Lissa), Maude (Mac), Kate, Chris, Ryan, Caroline, Teddy, Henry, and Elizabeth, and one great-grandchild, Calvin. As well as nine nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to the visitation in honor of Bernie on Thursday, January 4, 2024 from 5-8pm in the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home located at 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) Weymouth. Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home Friday Morning at 9:30am for a Celebration of Life prior to the funeral mass at Immaculate Conception Church in E. Weymouth at 10:30am. Bernie will be cremated following the mass.
