Atllan S. Buxaj, age 86, of Weymouth, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 7, 2026.
Atllan was born in Tepelene, Albania, and raised during the difficult years of World War II. Patriotism ran deeply in his family, as his grandfather had earned the title of Patriot, recognizing his sacrifices he made in the fight of Albania gaining its independence in 1912. While his dad, a World War II hero, was killed by the nazis. After losing first his father and later his mother amid the war and political turmoil of the time, Atllan was raised and educated in an orphanage in Berat.
His childhood was difficult, to say the least, but those early hardships helped shape Atllan into the determined and resilient man he became. He perservered through all hardships, which never hardened his kind soul. He never took no for an answer and always did whatever was necessary to create a better life for himself and, eventually, for the family he loved so dearly.
Atllan proudly served in the Albanian Air Force. His military education and his passion for flying sent him to Russia, where he received training as a pilot. When diplomatic relations between Albania and Russia were cut off, he was sent to China to complete his studies. Atllan firmly believed that education was the path to overcoming poverty and building a more promising future. He applied himself tirelessly to his studies and went on to serve as a pilot, among many other responsibilities, throughout his distinguished military career.
In 1972, Atllan married his beloved wife, Fatime Buxaj. Because of his military service, the family moved throughout Albania, spending much of their time in Tirana and later at the coastal town of Fier, in the south, where Atllan and Fatime raised their children and built a loving home together.
In 2007, Atllan moved to the United States to be closer to his family. Although he made a new home in the US, he remained deeply proud of his Albanian heritage and carried the strength, traditions, and patriotism of his homeland with him throughout his life.
Atllan was the beloved husband of Fatime Buxaj of Weymouth and the devoted father of Anisa of Weymouth, Nevila of Weymouth, and Adriatik and his fiancee, Claudia, of Italy. He was the loving grandfather of Rebecca, Alessandro, and Vivian, and the dear brother of Nado Bele of Albania.
Atllan will be remembered for his remarkable perseverance, his deep love for his native country, strong belief in education, and lifelong devotion to his family. Everything he accomplished was driven by his desire to give those he loved a better life. His journey was marked by hardship, courage, sacrifice, achievement, and kindness, and the legacy he leaves behind will live on through the family for whom he worked so tirelessly.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a visitation for Atllan on Friday, September 11, 2026, from 10–11 AM at the C.C.
