William E. Newell, age 80, a lifelong Weymouth resident who passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, September 3, 2021. Bill graduated Weymouth High School in 1959. He married his beloved wife, Joan, in 1960 and they settled together in S. Weymouth where they started a family.

Bill was in the fire protection industry his entire life and retired from Carlysle Engineering at the age of 75. In retirement Bill loved spending time with his family.

Bill and Joan spent winters in Maui for over 20 years and had a house in Sutton, NH for 50 years. Bill also enjoyed golfing, boating, skiing, and snowmobiling but there is a special place in his heart for the amazing memories he and his wife made camping every year in Myles Standish with their grandkids.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Joan Newell (Austin) of S. Weymouth. He is the loving father of James Newell of NH, Jacqueline D’Olimpia of Mattapoisett, Laurie DeMarco and her husband John of Rockland, and the late Billy Newell, cherished grandfather to Melinda, Alicia, Brian, Billy, Jillian, Nicholas, Samantha, and Jessica, and his eight great-grandchildren. Bill is also the brother of Wendell Newell, Joe Sloan, Georgia Richardson, Terri Hickey, and the late Kathy Cunningham.


Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to the visiting hours for Bill on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 from 4-8pm in the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home located at 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) S. Weymouth. Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 9:30am Thursday morning for a Celebration of Life prior to the Funeral Mass which will be at St. Francis Xavier Church, Weymouth at 10:30am. Cremation will follow.
