Arlene L. Butterworth

d. August 4, 2017

Arlene L. (Rago) of Braintree, age 86, passed away Friday August 4, 2017 after bravely enduring the devastating effects of cancer. She is survived by her children: David A. Butterworth of Pembroke, Lisa A. Aleo and husband Dr. Brian M. Aleo and their daughter Elizabeth A. of Lakeville, Paul S. Butterworth and husband Andrew J. Hanes of Holliston. She is predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Walter; her parents Frank T. Rago and Lillian E. (Gurnham) of Weymouth and a brother, Frank T. Jr. of Littleton, CO.
Arlene was born and raised in Weymouth, MA and was a WHS graduate, Class of 1948. She loved to talk of her Weymouth days whether it was the hardships of growing up during the Depression and WWII or the nostalgic memories of skating on the pond, a bountiful garden, a doting mother, or wonderful friendships that would last a lifetime. Before she stopped working to raise a family she was a clerk for Jordan's Insurance Agency in Weymouth and later enjoyed working in retail for many years at Lord & Taylor in Braintree. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, knitting, making jewelry and oil painting. Arlene loved shopping for antiques and marveled at the treasures displayed on her favorite television program, Antiques Roadshow. Although Arlene did acquire many beautiful pieces in her search for a Roadshow winner, her most valued treasures were her children, granddaughter and the dearly held relationships built with many neighbors and friends along the way. Whether a friendship made recently or one enduring many years Arlene cherished occasions spent with those she loved. The memories of those happy times sustained her until the very end.
Family and friends are invited to visiting hours for Arlene on Wednesday, August 9 from 6-8 PM at C.C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) S. Weymouth, MA. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Arlene's memory to VNA of Cape Cod Hospice and Palliative Care, P.O. Box 370 Hyannis, MA 02601 or Sustaining the Mind Endowed Fund, Brandeis National Committee 415 South St. MS 132, Waltham, MA 02453, www.brandeis.edu/bnc.
